Judge rips DOJ for attempting to remove her from case challenging Trump’s executive order on law firm

A federal judge forcefully denied a request from the Trump administration seeking her removal from a case involving a challenge to an executive order aimed at a law firm with Democratic ties. In her ruling, the judge criticized the Justice Department for resorting to personal attacks instead of addressing the legal merits of the case.

The judge stated that such tactics go beyond targeting an individual and ultimately undermine public confidence in the judiciary as a whole. She emphasized that this approach—focusing on perceived bias rather than sound legal reasoning—threatens the integrity of the court system.

The government's motion for disqualification alleged a pattern of bias based on the judge's previous comments and rulings. However, the judge used her written opinion not only to refute each accusation but also to caution against what she described as an alarming strategy of discrediting judges whose decisions are unfavorable to the administration.

This situation reflects a broader trend in which critics of certain rulings have escalated their rhetoric to include personal attacks against judges, rather than limiting their objections to the decisions themselves. Some political figures have even pushed for the removal of specific judges, prompting a rare public response from the chief justice, who defended the impartiality of the courts and warned against politically motivated criticisms.

In her decision, the judge took particular issue with a statement in the disqualification motion that warned of "encroachments" on presidential power, arguing that such language misrepresents the role of the judiciary. She reaffirmed that determining the legality of executive actions is the responsibility of the courts—not the executive branch or its legal advocates.

She also criticized the Justice Department’s sweeping dismissal of all legal challenges to the administration’s policies, warning that such a stance threatens to erode the public’s trust in the judicial process. Citing prior warnings from court leaders, she underscored the importance of maintaining respect for the judiciary's role in upholding the rule of law.
