Sheriff’s office speaks on suspect’s past, deputy stepmother

The stepmother of Phoenix Ikner, the suspect in the recent Florida State University shooting, has taken personal leave from her position at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office to cope with the tragic events, the agency confirmed Friday.

Phoenix Ikner, 20, is the stepson of Deputy Jessica Ikner, a veteran of the sheriff’s office with 18 years of service. According to the agency’s Executive Director of Community and Media Relations, Shonda Knight, Deputy Ikner has made significant contributions during her tenure and is now taking time away from work to process what has happened.

“This is a difficult time for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, our entire community, and most importantly, for the victims and their families,” Knight said. “Deputy Ikner is currently on leave, and we do not have a set date for her return.”

Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil stated on Thursday that Phoenix Ikner had access to one of Deputy Ikner’s firearms, which was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

Knight clarified that Phoenix Ikner’s only formal connection to the sheriff’s office was through the Youth Advisory Council, a community program that engages local youth in discussions about crime prevention, safety, and law enforcement initiatives.

“As the child of a law enforcement officer, he was taught about firearm safety and was exposed to responsible handling practices,” Knight said.

Deputy Ikner was honored in March 2024 as the Law Enforcement Employee of the Month for her outstanding service, which has included roles in uniform patrol, the bailiff unit, and school resource operations.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, which is being led by the Tallahassee Police Department.

“Our hearts go out to the victims of this devastating incident,” Knight added. “As part of the law enforcement community, we are thankful for our partners who prepare for situations like this, even though we always hope they never happen.”
